7. London Cabs on Tourism Mission

Twenty London taxis will travel to the continent to spearhead a £25 million tourism campaign to lure more overseas visitors to the UK.

The cabs, which include one painted gold to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee, will leave Dover by ferry for a five-day tour of Holland, Germany and France.

The three countries are among a group of nations being targeted by the British Tourist Authority (BTA) in the campaign.

 

Driven by members of the Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers, the taxis will be visiting the Dutch cheese town of Gouda as well as Hamburg, Cologne and Paris.

The cabs will sport the campaign logo "Only in Britain. Only in 2002" as well as Union flags.

Outlined last week, the BTA campaign has £20 million of Government support and aims to attract one million extra visitors to Britain this year - an increase that will generate an additional £500 million for the UK economy.

The BTA reckons that around £166 million of the extra tourist income will be spent on accommodation, about the same amount will be spent on shopping (with half of this going on clothes) and about £100 million will go on eating out, with the rest spent on travel, services and general entertainment.
